TCM Traditional Chinese

Another system of Medicine that has been around for thousands of years, but today typically falls into the realm of “Alternative Medicine” in the eyes of westerners. I would encourage you to at least investigate the basics of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

I have been to a Chinese Medicine Doctor for acupuncture, and I have taken some Chinese Herbs, but beyond that I know little about the practice.

You may find treatmentd in either or both practices that work effectively for your pain problems.

This is not the same as Intrathecal drug delivery. IV drips can be anything from drugs to vitamins or minerals. The reason this is valid and helpful treatment modality is the medication or vitamins/minerals go directly into the veins bypassing the stomach.

Most people do not realize that oral vitamin consumption may only deliver as little as 5 to 15% of the vitamin to your system. People who are ill generally absorb even less! You’re intestinal tract is your “Second Brain” full of nerves and needs the care an attention the rest of your spine receive. Opportunistic pathogens in one area of the body may prevent another area of the body from receiving the healing attention it needs. The body is a whole!

This is a complex topic whose use extends from Mainstream to Alternative Therapies. The whole point is to bypass the digestive tract and deliver Nutrition/Drugs directly to the bloodstream.

Kinesiology

Kinesiology, also known as Human Kinetics, is the science of human movement. It focuses on how the body functions and moves. A kinesiological approach applies scientific and evidence based medical principles towards the analysis, preservation and enhancement of human movement in all settings and populations. Kinesiologists work in research, the fitness industry, clinically, and in industrial environments. It is not to be confused with Applied Kinesiology, an alternative medicine technique.

Applied Kinesiology

Applied Kinesiology (AK) is a practice of using manual muscle-strength testing for medical diagnosis and a subsequent determination of prescribed therapy. It purportedly gives feedback on the functional status of the body.

AK is a practice within the realm of alternative medicine and is therefore different from “kinesiology,” which is the scientific study of human movement. AK has been criticized on theoretical and empirical grounds, and characterized as pseudoscience. With only anecdotal accounts providing positive evidence for the efficacy of the practice, a review of peer-reviewed studies concluded that the “evidence to date does not support the use of [AK] for the diagnosis of organic disease or pre/subclinical conditions.”

AK draws together many similar therapies. It attempts an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to health care. George J. Goodheart, a chiropractor, originated AK in 1964. Subsequently, its use spread to other chiropractors, and a few physical therapists, dentists, and medical doctors. In 1976, the International College of Applied Kinesiology was founded.

Applied kinesiology is a system that evaluates structural, chemical, and mental aspects of health using manual muscle testing alongside conventional diagnostic methods. The essential premise of applied kinesiology that is not shared by mainstream medical theory is that every organ dysfunction is accompanied by a weakness in a specific corresponding muscle, the viscerosomatic relationship. Treatment modalities relied upon by practitioners include joint manipulation and mobilization, myofascial, cranial and meridian therapies, clinical nutrition, and dietary counseling.

A manual muscle test in AK is conducted by having the patient resist using the target muscle or muscle group while the practitioner applies a force. A smooth response is sometimes referred to as ‘a strong muscle’ and a response that was not appropriate is sometimes called ‘a weak response’. This is not a raw test of strength, but rather a subjective evaluation of tension in the muscle and smoothness of response, taken to be indicative of stresses and imbalances in the body. A weak muscle test is equated to dysfunction and chemical or structural imbalance or mental stress, indicative of a body dissatisfied with suboptimal functioning. The most common test is the arm-pull-down test, or “Delta test,” where the patient resists as the practitioner exerts a downward force on an extended arm. Proper positioning is paramount to ensure that the muscle in question is the prime mover, minimizing interference from adjacent muscle groups

Different Types of Massage Treatments

Deep Tissue – Targets deep layers of muscles and connective tissue

Rolfing - A specific form of deep tissue work

Trigger Point Therapy – Addresses Adhesions in the muscles

Swedish – most common, long smooth strokes and kneading, circular motions

Shiatsu – Finger pressure on acupuncture meridians

Thai

Many many more

My point in this post is not to cover every single variation of massage, but to point out there are treatments that may address your specific problem areas.

Therapies like Deep Tissue Massage are designed for relieving muscle contraction and reducing pain. Not all massage therapists are alike, some do not understand how to do this properly – this is a form of medical massage, as opposed to just a relaxing massage to reduce stress. All massage work has benefits. Try several different modalities and see what works best for you. Be careful of the oils the therapist uses – I like grapeseed oil.- as some oils contain fragrances and are toxic to the chemically sensitive. You’re skin will absorb these chemicals.

The only downside to massage treatments is cost. I would go everyday if I could afford the expense, or better yet I’d have the therapist stop by my home. Give massage a try, it’s great!

My Experience with Acupuncture

Works for some to help with pain. I tried Acupuncture with electrical therapy (At a Chiropractors Office” and it did nothing for me, but he person doing the work may not have been fully schooled as to the proper treatment.

I then found a true Oriental Acupuncture Specialist, and it made me realize the Chiropractor was clueless. The Doctor I saw for Acupuncture was born in China, Trained in China, and was actually a retired Orthopedic Surgeon in China. The number of needles he placed, the location of placement and the effects on my muscles were completely different from the “treatment” (Money bilking) I received from the Chiropractor. In my defense the Chiropractor came highly recommended by the Naturopathic Physician I was seeing at the time. But I should have been smart enough to know that they Guy had no clue what he was doing. Now I do. The benefits of hindsight.

In short, make sure your Acupuncturist is fully trained and licensed (Yes they have schools for Acupuncture).

I received some pain reduction and additional range of motion from my treatments (A series of 10 every couple of days). Unfortunately for me the treatments did not solve my chronic problems and due to the expense ($60 per treatment) vs. benefit I was forced to abandon further treatment.

Similar Modalities Like Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a healing technique used in Asia by practitioners of Traditional Medicine, in both the clinical setting and in homes, but little known in the West. It involves palpation and cutaneous stimulation where the skin is pressured, in strokes, by a round-edged instrument; that results in the appearance of small red petechiae called ‘sha’, that will fade in 2 to 3 days.

Raising Sha removes blood stagnation considered pathogenic, promoting normal circulation and metabolic processes. The patient experiences immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, nausea, and so on. Gua Sha is valuable in the prevention and treatment of acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many other acute or chronic disorders.

A Warning about Chiropractic Manipulation: High Velocity Chiropractic maneuvers can put you at risk of severe neck injury. While a Chiropractor may say it’s “Safe” then quote you a bunch of statistical numbers, the fact remains you are at risk!

Gentle manipulation for some who are also correcting their muscle imbalances and coupled with Myofascial Release may be of benefit at some point. I have not had success with this modality as I have yet to find a Chiropractor who will listen to my complaints and symptoms. I tell them my condition and they just do whatever the hell they want. So I’m through with this pseduo-science.

Maybe you will have better luck. Cons: The problem arises if you have an unrecognized neurologic deficit and the chiropractor does not do any radiological studies to determine if there is any compromise of the nerves or the spinal cord. If this happens then the practice of aggressive chiropractic manipulation can be detrimental or even deadly.

My take on Chiropractic is this… Discs do not just pop out of place (Outside of Trauma) on their own. Structural forces are pulling ligaments, muscles, and soft tissues. Think of a Tent and the ropes and poles that hold everything in correct position. What happens if one rope breaks or is to short or pulled off to the side? The tent falls or is crooked. The muscles and ligaments and soft tissues that support your spine must be corrected BEFORE you can hope to just pop something back into place. If the supporting structures are not in proper alignment everything will just pop out of place again. I suppose there are some in the Chiropractic Profession (70,000+ in the USA) that understand this, but I have not yet met one.

A patient’s blood is first withdrawn. The blood is then exposed to a stream of ultraviolet light (UV). Lastly, the blood is slowly reintroduced back into the body. I have had this proceedure and it is nothing to fear. Ultra violet blood irradiation has it’s critics but I am not among them. I believe blood irradiation can be a safe and effective treatment to kill disease and allow the body to heal naturally.

Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation – My Experience

Unlike most Health related sites, this site HealthSynergyRx is about my own personal experiences with a procedure or my own research into a procedure or “modality” that I thought might help me recover from a long term serious illness. After 11 physicians and a full year I finally found a Naturopathic Physician that works with many treatments the established USA Allopathic Medical community either ignores or is in a state of complete apathy towards. Many of these treatments the Allopathic community would label as “Alternative” have been with us for a century or more and have proven their effectiveness long before the big Pharmaceutical Companies and their governmental lobbyist pushed them aside. These treatment modalities have helped many individuals to completely recover from illness without the side effect of drug therapy or surgery.

Let me begin with my introduction to Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation. As noted I have been seeking help for an incompletely diagnosed condition. I will not describe my condition only to say it has many elements and symptoms from chronic infection and inflammation. While most standard blood work was returned normal my viral load and potential bacterial/fungal load is not off the charts but “high”. So I have been receiving IV Drip treatments of vitamins and various natural antibiotic agents. I do not know the exact agents so I can not report about them yet. As I recover perhaps I will learn more from the nurses and be able to share more with you.

The process was quite simple for my UVBI treatment. I was already hooked up to the Vitamin IV Drip and was taken into another room where a small electronic box with an ultraviolet tube and standard IV tubing was sitting on a small table. The nurse connected the tubing to my IV Drip and used a syringe to withdraw 60cc slowly through the box where the blood was irradiated. The blood was then slowly returned to my body by pushing it back through the syringe. The nurse then repeated this procedure. During this time I was talking and completely alert.

Upon completion of the procedure I suddenly felt faint (You would have thought that the sight of all my blood in the tube would have effected me, but it did not). My nervous system (which is beyond conscious control – I do not know exactly which nerves are involved only that I was told the “Vagas Nerve) just momentarily reacted. I started to sweat and felt light headed. I was told to place my head on the desk, relax and just breathe and the sensation would pass. I was given a small amount of orange juice to drink. I was also advised that it would be a good idea for me to eat before the next procedure. Unfortunately as a result of my condition I have little appetite.

10 minutes after the Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation procedure I was able to stand and walk back to the IV room and continue my drip. At this point I was extremely tired. I finished my IV drip and returned home. As of this writing (6 hours later) I am still very tired. I may be experiencing some “die off effect” as the toxins released by the dead viruses and bacteria are still in my body. I have been drinking all kinds of water and urinating frequently and hope to feel more energy tomorrow.

I was told everyone reacts a little differently to the ultraviolet blood irradiation based on there condition and their own body. I asked other patients in the IV Drip room their experiences and some did not get light headed at all. This procedure is easy, fast, and PROVEN effective in killing viruses and bacteria in the blood. Please read the next small section for a little background.

Ultraviolet light Irradiation Background Information

Ultraviolet light has been used as a disinfectant for many years and is, in fact, still used for that purpose. If the late 1900′s, Niels Ryberg Finsen used this knowledge for a new application and started using external ultraviolet treatment in skin and mucus membrane diseases, for which he was awarded a Nobel prize in 1903. By the mid-1930′s ultraviolet treatment was well-accepted for erysipelas and other skin infections, as well as mumps.

One of the first pioneers to use ultraviolet light on blood rather than externally was Emmett K. Knott, who irradiated the blood of his first human subject in 1928. The patient had a case of sepsis (bloodstream infection) following an abortion. She had been declared beyond help by the attending physicians, but responded dramatically to the irradiation, recovering and being able to bear other children.

Other researchers followed, showing the effectiveness of ultraviolet blood irradiation (UVBI) in treating both bacterial and viral infections. Hancock and Knott demonstrated that ultraviolet light could be used effectively in the treatment of bloodstream infections. By June of 1942,520 patients had been treated successfully with ultraviolet therapy without harmful effects.

Dr. George Miley was a clinical physician who practiced UVBI extensively in the 1930′s. His work demonstrated an increase of oxygen absorption by the blood following ultraviolet exposure. Dr.Miley also reported on 151 consecutive unselected cases of acute infection treated by UVBI. In those cases that were treated early, 100 percent of the patients recovered fully. In moderately advanced cases, 98 percent recovered; and even patients who were near death experienced a 42 percent recovery rate.

With such phenomenal success, why is UVBI almost unknown today? With the debut of antibiotic therapy, it’s ease of treatment and it’s success in treating infections, it became the treatment of choice, and UVBI fell by the wayside. However, with the advent o multiple drug-resistant infections and an increasing population who cannot tolerate drugs, this treatment has found a rebirth and is again showing it’s effectiveness.

Some of the proven effects of UVBI are:

Inactivation of toxins and viruses

Destruction and inhibition of growth of bacteria

Enhancement of the immune system’s ability to fight infections

Increase in oxygenation of the blood

Activation of steroids.

Increased cell permeability

Activation of cortisone-like molecules, called sterols, into Vitamin D

Other effects and much more information are listed in the book Into the Light by William Campbell Douglas, M.D., available at our office.

Individuals vary in their sensitivities to UVBI. Sensitivities may be modified by certain drugs such as sulfanilamide. Over-dosage with ultraviolet light produces depression, lessened resistance to bacterial infections, and reduced bacteria-killing potency of the blood with a fall in hemoglobin. The level of exposure required for an overdose is not approached in proper clinical practice.

The method of UVBI used in our office involves withdrawing the patient’s blood into a tube (treated with heparin to prevent clotting), passing it into a crystal tube as it is drawn past the ultraviolet light and drawn into a 60cc syringe. Then it is slowly pushed back into the body. This passes the blood through the ultraviolet light twice–coming out and going in. This process is generally done twice, to irradiate approximately 120 cc of the blood. The irradiated blood can then emanate secondary irradiation to the rest of the blood.

We frequently combine this therapy with IV hydrogen peroxide therapy, as each therapy enhances the effect of the other.

Possible uses for UVBI could include colds, viral syndromes, influenza, acute and chronic sinusitis, acute and chronic bronchitis, emphysema, other acute or chronic infections, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. With the theory that rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases are caused by toxic reactions to chronic bacterial infections, we are anxious to try this therapy on these frustrating diseases, as UVBI is effective against both bacteria and toxins. This treatment is experimental in many other diseases, and it’s use can be discussed with your physician.

With an acute infection such as a cold or the beginning of the flu, generally one treatment is adequate for a reduction of toxic symptoms in 12 to 48 hours. Serious or chronic bacterial or viral infections may require more treatment, as recommended by the physician.

Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia generally show improvement with about ten treatments, with two treatments a week for the first week or two, then weekly thereafter.

Characteristics of Ultraviolet

Physical:

Ultra-violet has a chemical and bacteriocidal action on the blood and tissues of the body. It breaks down the bacterial toxins and helps the white blood cells in their phagocytic action.

Ultra-violet’s chemical reaction depends upon its vitamin reaction in the system. Vitamins A, B, C, D and E are affected by the ultra-violet light.

Ultra-violet plays a great part in the calcium phosphorus balance and in iron and iodine fixation.

Ultra-violet accelerates the lymphatic and circulatory activities.

Ultra-violet normalizes all metabolism and glandular activities.

Ultra-violet stimulates antibody production and immunizes the body against disease.

Ultra-violet has a stimulating action on the Sympathetic System. It, however, acts as a sedative to pain.

Ultra-violet is good for the heart and the lungs.

For example: EDTA Chelation Therapy. The other agents (Water, Vitamins, etc.) that are used in the EDTA Chelation Therapy Solution are designed to “boost” the treatments value. As the EDTA removes calcium deposits it also removes other essential minerals which must be replaced. I call it the Unproven Proven Therapy, because it is used and effective in many places around the world, but ridiculed by the American Heart Association (Who has yet to study the therapy properly). The primary use of Chelation Therapy is for acute metals poisoning. The primary area of controversy is it’s use in Heart Patients to improve blood flow through blocked arteries.

EDTA Chelation Therapy (IV Not Oral Chelation) – Personal Experience

First off I’d like to comment about the “Experience” – IV Drip into vein. If I needed this to clear arteries I’d do this in a heartbeat (Pun Intended) before I would do any kind of Artery or Heart surgery. The main discomfort is in the insertion of the IV Needle and the few hours it takes out of your day.

EDTA is the substance used in my IV drips (Intravenous Administration). The sensation of the fluid as it enters into the arm can be a little discomforting (Slight warmth and aching), but certainly nowhere near the pain of a more invasive procedure. The Physician that oversees my treatment has done thousands of Chelation treatment. I have talked to other patients that have completed this treatment for heart problems and they swear by it. I can no give you an overwhelming endorsement just based on my experience, but I can say that those I have talked to would do it again. My Chelation is to remove calcium deposits from the joints and I have high expectations – we’ll see.

Chelation Therapy Formula & FDA Approval

It is my understanding Chelation Therapy with EDTA is approved only for the removal of toxic “Heavy Metals”, but it is legal to purchase and use for other purposes in the same way Neurontin is prescribed for Nerve Pain and related disorders while it is only approved by the FDA for two specific treatments. On to the basic approved formula as mixed by the drug companies. (Note formulas will vary by Pharmaceutical Company).

* Solution contains only ONE of these concentrations as determined by Physician for each individual case, another more concentrated solution with half the mL of ingredients and same mL of EDTA is available.

Keep in mind also that your Physician will also administer mineral and vitamin replacement as the EDTA will “pull” essential metals like Zinc and Copper right along with undesirable metals like Mercury, Cadmium, Lead and Nickel. The essential nutrients MUST be replaced. You’re Calcium will also need to be balanced.

Chelation Therapy Articles

It’s beyond the scope of this site to dig deeper into this subject. I present it for your consideration as a therapy that might work for a condition you may need treating. For the most part I am simply sharing my own experience.

There are plenty of resources online where you can research the benefits of EDTA Chelation, and Chelation Therapies. Keep in mind EDTA is not the only Chelator but has the most proven track record. Some natural foods like Cilantro and supplements like Alpha Lipoic Acid are also Chelators.

It is my understanding that for most people Oral Chelation is not beneficial because not enough of the Chelating properties of EDTA are absorbed into the blood stream. Please do your own research and draw your own conclusions. You have to choose what to believe and you have to decide for yourself whether you believe the many success stories or the Pharmaceutical Machine that does not want these types of inexpensive therapies cutting into their profits.

Doctors make a lot of money doing Heart related operations and while Chelation may seem expensive to many (Up to $250 per treatment and dozens of treatments) it is very inexpensive compared to the Surgical Alternatives. And how many surgeries are truly successful? Choose what is best for you! When you research how many people die from Chelation each year you are going to be in for a big surprise (I didn’t find any!). How many die from surgery?
